Concert, performer-composer option

Designed with a view to conceptualizing new trajectories in creative music, this option offers an integrated approach to interpretation and composition and/or improvisation.

This advanced programme represents a very distinctive option on the road towards evolving and refining their personal artistic voice.

The performer-composer option is open to students who already have solid mastery of their instrument and composition and/or improvisation.

The emphasis is placed on the development of a personal technique for each student, including original improvisation systems, original notation methods or new techniques and syntheses, such as the use of mixed media for instance. The students on this programme perform their own works, in a setting where they perform as a soloist or in an ensemble.

Study programme

Main training

The student performers-composers have two professors for their main subject, one for interpretation, the other for composition and/or improvisation. Each individual lesson lasts for 40 minutes per week. The two teachers are in constant dialogue so as to give the student consistent support during their two years of study.

Special training

In the special training module, the student perfects their practice in an ensemble, whether in the context of chamber music or in larger ensembles (orchestras or choirs). They also enter into dialogue with the other students studying the same subject, in the context of an improvisation workshop. Finally, the stage dimension that the performers-composers’ production can take is dealt with in the context of scenography and stage design given by a Manufacture’s team.

Complementary and optional training

In this module, a portion of the free choice is left to the student. Depending on what their Master’s project is and what their professional project is, students can choose between several topics proposed by the HEM’s tutors within the framework of research workshops, between several classes that could supplement their training and between several methods of obtaining validation of their preparation for the profession.

Master’s Project

Le projet de Master comporte:

  • an artistic production at two public recitals,
  • a written work showing the musician’s capacity for critical thinking.
