A research project by the Haute école de musique de Genève (HEM) under the direction of Jean-Yves Haymoz.
This video examines the sound of the lute and its impact on the powers attributed to music during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Gut-strung or metal-strung, fretted or fretless, played with the fingers or a plectrum, the lute offers a far greater diversity of sound than the standardized form of the instrument has imposed. Bor Zuljan reviews different instruments and rediscovers unexplored worlds of sound in order to find new solutions for achieving some of the lost effects of early music.
With: Bor Zuljan et Monica Pustilnik
Directed by: Guillaume Castella (HEM-HES-SO)
Pieces performed: improvised fantasias, improvisation on the Pavana descordata, Fantasia a dui liutti by Francesco Da Milano.
