Digital Technologies for Creative Practice, Teaching, and Research

At the Haute École de Musique de Genève, we view digital technologies as a key enabler of both artistic education and institutional operations.

Our digital strategy is aligned with the broader strategic framework of HES-SO Geneva and is developed in close collaboration with the Bureau de la stratégie numérique (BSN) and the Direction des systèmes d’information (DSI). It builds upon their overarching priorities and objectives while adapting them to the specific artistic, educational, and research context of the Geneva University of Music.

Through this strategy, our ambition is to provide a coherent, secure, inclusive, and sustainable digital environment that supports academic excellence, artistic creation, and pedagogical innovation.

The strategy is structured around four complementary pillars, which guide our current and future projects and initiatives.

Pillar 1: Information Governance

Improving the Organization and Value of Data

Every day, we process a significant volume of educational, artistic, research, and administrative data. Effective information governance is essential to enhance the quality of our services, support the automation of certain processes, and ensure the long-term preservation of the content produced at the Geneva University of Music.

Our Objectives

  • Establish cross-functional processes for the entire university community.
  • Improve the experience of students, staff, and institutional partners.
  • Implement an institutional data management and valorization policy aligned with HES-SO’s objectives for optimization and sustainability.

Key Initiatives

  • Digitalization of the submission process for Bachelor's and Master's theses and projects.
  • Digitization of the process for entering and validating examination programmes.
  • Implementation of a digital planning tool for artistic productions and activities.
  • Development of a policy for archiving and managing the lifecycle of digital content.
Pillar 2 : Towards an Inclusive and Responsible Digital Environment

Training, Support, and Reducing Inequalities

We encourage a critical, responsible, and equitable appropriation of digital technologies across our entire community. This involves the development of practical skills, as well as reflection on issues of inclusion, ethics, environmental impact, and the use of artificial intelligence technologies.

Our Objectives

  • Strengthen student employability and the professional development of staff.
  • Combat forms of digital exclusion.
  • Promote sustainable and responsible uses of digital technologies.

Key Initiatives

  • Integration of digital accessibility considerations into actions promoting equal opportunities.
  • Partnerships for the refurbishment and redistribution of computer equipment.
  • Targeted training on digital tools and generative AI.
  • Provision of resources and practical guides.
Pillar 3: Pedagogical and Artistic Innovation

Experimenting with New Forms of Learning and Creation

We position ourselves as a space for pedagogical and artistic experimentation, where digital technologies support the evolution of teaching, learning, creative practice, and research.

Our Objectives

  • Stimulate creativity through the integration of digital media and artificial intelligence.
  • Develop more flexible and hybrid learning pathways.
  • Support teachers in the creation of digital content and open educational resources.

Key Initiatives

  • Provision of open-access educational content via the HEM Digital Campus.
  • Integration of transversal digital skills into study programmes.
  • Workshops and training sessions for teachers (AI, personal learning environments).
  • Pedagogical projects combining artistic creation, technology, and innovation.
Pillar 4: Digital Technologies in Applied Research

Analyzing the Impact of Digital Technologies on Musical Practices

We develop research that engages with digital technologies both as tools and as objects of study, in order to analyse their effects on teaching, creation, assessment, and musical performance.

Our Objectives

  • Encourage interdisciplinary approaches linking the arts, technology, and education.
  • Disseminate research findings in open and accessible formats.
  • Strengthen connections between research, teaching, professional practice, and civil society.

Key Initiatives

  • Ongoing research project on remote assessment and admission procedures.
  • Development of a digital tool for the visualisation and territorial analysis of social inequalities.
  • Development of an application dedicated to musicians’ health prevention.
