Anatomy of a flute

This video was produced as part of the research project ‘The Lost Aspects of the Modern Flute’ under the direction of Jacques Zoon. The project involves the design and construction of a flute that facilitates the production of microtones, as well as the execution of glissandos and multiphonics. The innovations are characterised by:

  • A significant increase in the number of possible fingerings
  • Keys that can be operated alone or together with a hole
  • A hole of at least 10mm in diameter for each semitone
  • A maximum reduction in the number of keys, allowing for direct contact between the fingers and the flute
  • A fingering system similar to that of Boehm (except for the G# key, which is an open key to avoid a break in the glissando)
