Résumé

Around 1500, the lute became the instrument of choice at the European courts, which were in full cultural and spiritual bloom. Considered ‘Orpheus's lyre’ by the humanists, it embodied the metaphysical ideal of the power of music, which was also closely linked to improvisation. For the first time on record, this programme revives this tradition: almost entirely improvised, it illustrates the Renaissance lute in all its surprising colours and sonorities, like a living instrument.

This CD is part of the research project Fantaisie - Le pouvoir de la musique by Bor Zuljan, carried out at the HEM's Institut de Recherche en Musique et Arts de la Scène (IRMAS), under the successive direction of Dušan Bogdanović, Jean-Yves Haymoz and Mónica Pustilnik.
