FACH. The vocal classification system used in European opera markets.

Is there a single opera market in Europe, or are there multiple opera markets across Europe?

Starting from this central question of the FACH project, Marcin Habela, in conversation with Agata Ubysz and Franziska Hunke, attempts to define the challenges involved in integrating young singers into the opera scene of continental Europe. This report was filmed during a practical workshop in Neuchâtel, featuring voice students from the HEM in Geneva and other Swiss institutions. In an audition setting before casting agents, the young singers became aware of the criteria that grant them access to the professional stage. Between aesthetic expectations, CV formatting, and comments on clothing choices, the question of vocal type takes center stage in a singer’s positioning. This report provides an overview of the traditions and new expectations of opera houses regarding the definition of vocal profiles.
