Présentation du projet

This project, financed mainly by the FNS, is the subject of a request for additional funding from the HES-SO strategic fund.

The project intends to compare the self-conceptions of music, the biographical narratives and the support systems of young musical talents in Switzerland (Geneva and Lucerne) and in China (Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou and Taiwan). A large-scale survey of students from the two countries will provide data on their self-conceptions of music and their biographies. A third part of the survey, carried out among institutional actors (ministerial offices, school directors, teachers), will make it possible to establish an inventory of existing policies and systems in the two countries for the supervision of young musical talents.

The project team includes ethnomusicologist Marc Antoine Camp (HSLu), psychologist Suse Petersen (HSLu), Xavier Bouvier (HEMGe) and two doctoral students, registered respectively at the University of Vienna and the Université de Genève.

The first phase of the project, which is the subject of this request for additional funding, extends over the period between August 2017 and July 2020. This phase includes the actual research activities, surveys and interviews, structured into three research components. distinct:

  • The first part, under the responsibility of Annatina Kull, includes a series of autobiographical interviews with students in Switzerland and China.
  • The second part, under the responsibility of Suse Petersen, includes a large-scale investigation using the methodological framework of the Musical Self Concept Inquiry (MUSCI).
  • The third part, under the responsibility of Xavier Bouvier, will draw up an inventory of existing systems in China for talent management, and will carry out a comparative review of the surveys carried out in Switzerland as part of the implementation of the new article 67a of the Constitution (Youth and music).

The second phase, between August 2020 and July 2021, will include the organization of a conference on comparative musical education. It will be the subject of a subsequent request for additional funding by the SSSTC (Switzerland-China cooperation) and the HES-SO strategic fund.
