The guitar class at the Haute école de musique de Genève (HEM) is a real cultural melting-pot. Following in the footsteps of Livia São Marcos and Dusan Bogdanovic, the class has been led with passion and dynamism since 2019 by Judicaël Perroy. Our professor supports his students as they define their artistic and professional projects, while giving them the resources to make them a reality.
Throughout the year, our students have access to unique opportunities. Masterclasses, more one-off events like the weekend based around the guitar, and special seminars built into the course, like the one on transcription for the guitar, are offered to them. The class works closely with the Department of Music of the Past. Chamber music also takes up an important place in our students’ course, who have the ability to work with different professors depending on the nature of their projects. The school makes available to the students a Romantic-era guitar (Johann Georg Stauffer) and classical concert guitars made by Andreas Kirschner and Florian Chauvet.
In addition to the individual classes, a weekly class centred on stage performance plays a central role in the course. It enables our students on the Bachelor’s, Master’s or CAS to make regular appearances, in order to prepare for the concerts or competitions that they want to present. These moments in the spotlight also facilitate exchanges between the students, experimentation and the expression of artistic liberty.
Finally, the guitar class collaborates closely with the local cultural scene, for instance during the Jeudis de la Guitare (Guitar Thursdays) events. Concerts are offered to the students on a regular basis through various channels, including the HEM itself, Swiss museums and other cultural sites, enabling them to appear in front of a larger audience.
