The horn in the orchestra at the end of the 18th century

During the second half of the eighteenth century, horn players' playing technique evolved. More and more musicians placed their hand in the horn's bell to enhance the instrument's melodic possibilities.

Sylvain Hollard looked at the signs of wear and tear on instruments in museums, as well as period engravings and paintings, to assess the spread of this new technique known as "blocked sounds", which coexisted with its predecessor until the early 1820s and 1830s.

This film is the result of work carried out as part of the Bachelor's opening module offered to students at the Haute école de musique de Genève.
