Leading an orchestra

The BA with conducting an orchestra as its main subject, dispensed by the department of orchestra instruments, is the primary pathway to the Master’s in conducting an orchestra and the profession of orchestra conductor.

Numerous renowned conductors have been through the class run by Laurent Gay, who has built up a solid reputation for himself as an educator over the years.

The training is aimed at people with proven abilities as a performer and with a good ear, as well as an inclination towards gestures and communication with others.

The orchestra conducting classes include work in the classroom or with two pianos, or indeed with the various orchestras of the HEM. Moreover, the students taking this curriculum have numerous opportunities to familiarize themselves with the different families of instruments, through observation of instrument classes, orchestral excerpt classes or an introduction to percussion.

Eager to help its students start becoming integrated into professional life as soon as they start their studies, the HEM offers them numerous opportunities to appear in public.  Moreover, the preparation for professions gives them the opportunity to meet some of the great names in music, who have developed careers that have been both distinctive and inspiring, with the aim of alerting the students to the need to (re)imagine the profession of musician, and that of orchestra conductor in particular. Finally, collaborations with professional orchestras in the region enable the students to observe orchestra conductors in action right from the start of their studies, and thereby to discover the many dimensions of this role: artistic, interpretative, human, organisational, etc.
