Imagination - The power of improvisation

This video has been produced as part of the research project "Improviaton - The power of music" under the direction of Jean-Yves Haymoz.

How do you recreate a 16th-century improvisation? At Villa I Tatti, Renaissance research center in the hills above Florence, Jean-Yves Haymoz, Philippe Canguilhem and Bor Zuljan reflect on how to interpret a fantaisie. These improvised works have come down to us in the form of scores or tablatures. More than compositions, however, these written sources have more of a testimonial value. Valued for its spontaneous, exciting, vital, even divine nature, improvisation plays an essential role in aesthetic reflection, around Marsilio Ficino, in the circle of Florentine thinkers.

This reflection led to the recording of the CD The Orpheus' Lute by Bor Zuljan and Monica Pustilnik in 2024, awarded the Diapason d'or and the Choc de Classica.
