Starting in 2026–27, two new departments will be created : an expanded Creation Department and a department dedicated to musical culture and theoretical practices.
From the 2026–27 academic year, HEM is reorganizing its Departments to create a more coherent grouping of disciplines and programs, thereby enhancing the clarity of its educational offerings.
The Creation Department will bring together programs in the fields of composition, mixed and multimedia composition, composition for screen, the performer-composer option of the Master’s in Music Performance (concert specialization), as well as the new Master’s in Music Project Creation. The department will also encompass all cross-disciplinary activities related to contemporary creation. In addition, it will host the CIMME – Interdisciplinary Center for Experimental Music and Media, as well as the ARTeM Center – a technical support and production center serving the HEM and its stakeholders. The new Creation Department will be headed by Julien Annoni, who is already responsible for the new Master’s in Music Project Creation.
The Department of Musical Culture and Theoretical Practices will bring together Master’s programs in the fields of theory, pedagogy, and ethnomusicology. It will also include all teaching related to theoretical practices (general music training at the Bachelor’s level, research-related courses, and the Bachelor’s in Music and Musicology). In addition, it will host the Center for Cultures – a place dedicated to teaching, research, and outreach in the field of music from diverse cultural areas. The new Department of Musical Culture and Theoretical Practices will be headed by Talia Bachir-Loopuyt, Professor of Ethnomusicology at HEM and Director of the Center for Cultures.
