Résumé

This practical edition of the treatise on diminution La Fontegara is the fruit of a research project supported by the Haute école de musique de Genève. The Fontegara is well-known to those who have engaged with the early modern repertoire, whether they are musicologists or musicians. This treatise, often considered something of an enigma, has only given rise to a handful of attempts to apply it. Our hypothesis consisted in thinking of the Fontegara as the work of a performer describing modes of playing for learning-related purposes.

This bilingual edition, in French and English, therefore puts the emphasis on a practical approach. The translation from Italian, which flows nicely and is less literal than those published hitherto, accurately reflects Ganassi’s spirit and style. The layout of the music lends itself to the playing of daily exercises, and the treatise is supplemented with some suggested applications. This practical edition is the result of a collective effort conducted over three years by William Dongois, Timea Nagy and Tiago Simas Freire, with the collaboration of musicologists Philippe Canguilhem and Christian Pointet. Three flautists, Pierre Boragno, François Lazarevitch and Vicente Parrilla, and a singer, Romain Bockler, made contributions to this adventure. It is the authors’ hope that this edition will contribute to a more rigorous approach to the art of Silvestro Ganassi, who was a marvelous performer throughout the sixteenth century.
