Résumé

Today, François-Joseph Fétis (1784-1871) is only known for being the author of an encyclopaedic work that is still used today: the Biographie universelle des musiciens et bibliographie générale de la musique. He was a prolific musicographer, however: he wrote hundreds of articles of music criticism, and dozens of works of all kinds ranging from brochures for a large readership to a significant collection of instrumental and vocal method books. He was equally active as a musician, and was at once organist, composer, pedagogue, librarian, conductor and, from 1832 onwards, director of one of Europe’s first conservatoires, in Brussels.

Though the biographical dimension occupies an important space in this book, it does not, strictly speaking, tell the story of Fétis’s life. The Belgian musicographer was chosen because he is one of the best examples of someone who promoted the revolution which, over the course of the 19th century, placed writing and reading at the heart of the musical practices of the age.
