From 25 to 27 September 2024, the exhibition "Endless Wear. A New Take on Upcycling" will be held in New York, showcasing a selection of garments designed by first-year students from HEAD - Geneva's fashion design programme.
As part of New York's Climate Week, HEAD - Geneva is delighted to be taking part in "Climate-Ring", a Swissnex initiative that transforms a New York arts centre into a boxing arena, symbolising the fight against climate change. For three days, Swiss and American experts and artists will be exhibiting and hosting events and performances to raise awareness and mobilise the public around this cause. Inspired by the resilience and adaptation required for boxing, this project is part of Climate Week NYC 2024.
The HEAD exhibition presents a selection of silhouettes and the products that accessorise them, created during the upcycling workshop held last March.
For five weeks, the workshop brought together 27 students who had to use all their creative potential to give a second life to raw materials considered too damaged to be distributed. Initially destined for the scrap heap, these materials were passionately worked by these young designers to create unique and innovative pieces.
An exercise in experimentation already well known to HEAD students, upcycling is taken a step further here through techniques for assembling and creating fabrics: woollens are adorned with recycled plastic, and prints are designed with ink and charcoal, and so on. Usually considered as a principle of reusing second-hand materials, upcycling is extended to the potential of new styles and silhouettes: old shirts reinterpreted in a bodice outfit full of drama, or a multitude of jackets reincorporated into voluminous trousers are examples of the proposals imagined by the students. A real work of inspiration that encourages young designers to open up their field of research in order to invent tomorrow's solutions in this field. On Wednesday, September 25, 2024, Raúl Egloff Alcaide will be featured in a special edition of the “Lens of Impact: Perspectives on Art and Design” lecture series, with a focus on fashion and sustainability.
