Studio - HABITER L'ESCALIER

February 2024

Studio led by David Fagart & Line Fontana (Fagart & Fontana)
Assisted by Maria Clara Castioni, Lola Jutzeler

This studio explores the theme of housing with communal resonances and materializes in a unique topographical situation, as it involves inhabiting a slope translated by a large staircase. In the slope, 27 plots form a compact ensemble. On each plot, a construction is built, generating a fragment of urban form. Six sets, consisting of four to five constructions, bring together as many students in a group for reflection on the programmatic and architectural aspects of their shared habitat. Three constructions integrate a common space dedicated to all the inhabitants. The constructive capacities of each plot are defined by an envelope template. Each student negotiates individually and collectively their habitability, adapting the staircase's topography to the different envisioned uses, orientations, and neighboring constructions.

The theme of housing with communal resonances governs both the programming and the design of spaces and architectural devices. The ambition is to meet the needs of the individual and the group, while creating conditions for social life to flourish, ensuring places of retreat and intimacy for each. The interweaving of shared and private spaces, as well as transitions between them, find resolution in plan and usage. The concept of rhythms of life, in its plurality and diversity, is transversal to the design of habitats, allowing for a multiplication of scenarios within the same space, whether shared or not.
