50 Hertz, 2020

January 2020 to July 2020

Each year CERCCO proposes two residences Workspace at CERCCO, of three months to artists, designers, architects and ceramists wishing to develop a personal ceramic project.

Salômé Guillemin-Poeuf worked at CERCCO's Workspace during the academic year 2019-2020.

50 Hertz is a drone music performance played with a ceramic set and neon tubes amplified with effects. Ceramics are wet instruments that produce infra-low frequencies sprinkled by electrical abrasions. They define an obscure sound and visual atmosphere.
The installation is entirely analog and reacts to the human body’s conductivity. The performance is a succession of contacts and body movements around the ceramics.

The insulating and conductive properties of glazes and clays used for the shaping of the instruments give a raw sound. This material is modeled by the gestures of the artist who composes an original sound piece. Thus, the choice of the ceramic ensemble allows to obtain each time a new scenic configuration, since each ceramic piece possesses its own sounds and gestures repertoire.

The ceramics were produced during the CERCCO residency 2019 - 2020 – the Experimentation and Research Centre for Contemporary Ceramics of the Geneva University of Art and Design. 50 Hertz has also been selected to be developed during the Fondation l’Abri residency 2020 - 2021.

Projet

The residency at CERCCO allowed me to develop and produce tools adapted to my work in sound and space. The "50 Hertz" project is a performance of drone music played with a set of ceramics and neon lights amplified by effects. I was then able to carry out a research work around matter as a conductive and insulating element involving water, electricity, different types of earths more or less charged with iron and conductive or non-conductive metallic enamels. The resulting ceramics are wet instruments that produce infra-low frequencies strewn with electrical abrasions. Together with neon lights, they define a space and a dark sound and visual atmosphere.

This time of residence has also allowed me to shape a theoretical and archaeological research on how a community is established. How does a primitive installation, defined by the presence of sound and a luminous atmosphere in a given space, induce group cohesion and the emergence of myths? Why and how are myths and beliefs the glue that holds a community together? How does this installation define a zone of sharing? This research stems from the archaeological work carried out on the prehistoric site of Bruniquel in France.
