Studio - Element / Fragment / Space

March 2021

Studio tutor: Leonid Slonimskiy (Kosmos)
Assistant: Bertrand Van Dorp (RDVA)

This semester’s studio with first-year students is dedicated to a project for the Fondation Immobilière pour le Développement des Entreprises Social (FIDES) to develop a restaurant on the outskirts of Geneva. The Restaurant will be occupied by the Geneva Red Cross and PRO Entreprise sociale privée.

Our daily spaces are made up of various elements: floor, wall, ceiling, partition, opening, furniture etc. First of all, the students will seek to break down the space in order to identify and understand the qualities of each element. With the help of careful archiving, they will analyse, study and conceptualise the assigned architectural element. They will then move from element to fragment. They will experiment and create their fragment with a detailed model. Finally, they will move from fragment to space.

Seven groups of students will then offer their different visions of the restaurant. Each group is invited to offer its combination of elements and fragments in the given space. The workshop encourages architectural responses that are not only aesthetic and harmonious, but above all sustainable and local.
