Studio - CINEMA IS A VERB : Wandering Cinema

September 2023 to January 2024

Studio led by Ana Luisa Soares et Ahmed Belkhodja (fala atelier)
Assisted by Robin Delerce

Cinema is a verb is a Master’s studio that explores the intersection between a mode of construction (the temporary) and a very specific program (the movie theater). The cinema department at HEAD – Genève urgently requires a dedicated space for educational and event-based film screenings. After several phases of research, two proposals were developed in detail until the end of the semester. These two projects aim to reconcile the practical requirements of the program with the diverse imaginaries it encompasses.

Wandering Cinema
The "Wandering Cinema," a transient creature landing on the terrace, liberates itself from conventional cinema norms. Detaching from the school, it offers a fully functional cinema for students and the neighborhood, complete with an experimental space below. Six legs anchor to the existing building, ensuring stability, leading to bleachers in the front, a cinema, and a projection room at the back. The exterior, adorned with metal scales, mimics an animal’s texture, resonating with the surrounding environment. Internally, burgundy velvet surfaces provide both aesthetics and acoustic isolation. The legs ingeniously resemble walking limbs, contributing to the cinema’s dynamic appeal. A tilted angle enhances terrace use and handicap access, shaping both the exterior and interior inclinations. The bar features a boxed design, offering a playful experience for patrons. This cinema represents an immersive and dynamic space that engages students and the community in a cinematic experience.
