Our first year students worked closely with five young activists, experts and sex educators from Nairobi to co-develop interactive narrations to foster the exchange of information on HIV prevention and treatment among young women most vulnerable and affected by HIV in Kenya. Through weekly dialogues and online sessions with local activists, our students co-created tools for adolescent girls, young women and people identifying as women between 15 and 24 years old.
Throughout the semester, this workshop addressed questions around narration in the mobile age, exploring various types of formats and story shapes. We also explored questions around techno-feminisms and how to conduct ethnographic research online. The result of this collaboration is a series of interactive narrations made with a variety of tools ranging from p5.js, Unity, to Twine and Fungus. They all address challenging topics for the youth audience such as HIV prevention, sexual and reproductive health and rights, and non-binary representation.
One project has been selected to be produced by UNAIDS. Next steps to develop this project are being currently discussed among partners.
We would like to thanks the sex educators, activists and community members from NAYA who collaborated closely with our students : Jerop Limo, Cindy Amaiza, Josephine Achieng Odhiambo, Gloriah Kerubo.
We also would like to thank our partners for their trust : UNAIDS, Hivos East Africa, NAYA and #GenEndIt.
