LES 6 TOITS, Geneva

September 2022

Under a 6-sided roof in the Geneva district of Chatelaine, the Interior Architecture Department offers a series of interventions to structure the premises of the Conservatoire populaire, Ensemble Contrechamps, Eklekto and the Orchestre de Chambre de Genève – four complementary musical and theatre projects. The common spaces of the newly formed institution (Les 6 Toîts) are brought together and enlivened thanks to custom-made furniture.

The project combines elements found in situ with added materials. Together, they recall the industrial past of the place while adapting to its new cultural use. All the elements, whether re-used or new, are red, thus harmonising with the previous structures. The addition of noble second-hand materials, such as marble, contrasts with the raw materials of the existing facade. Curves in the centre of the space also create movement within the strict lines of the halls. Formerly intended for industrial production, the premises are now fully equipped to shape minds.

In addition to paying particular attention to the re-use of materials, the project was carried out in collaboration with local craftspeople and retailers, mainly located in the ZIC (Zone Industrielle Commerciale).

The project is carried out by apropå and Atelier Hypothesis under commission from HEAD – Genève and on behalf of the Conservatoire populaire, Ensemble Contrechamps, Eklekto and the Orchestre de Chambre de Genève.
