Interactive illustrated history - workshop by Étienne Mineur

May 2022

The goal of this workshop is to image, design and produce an illustrated (and animated) story using speech recognition as the main interaction.

Étienne Mineur invited the students of the Bachelor Illustration to work on the creation and production of an interactive illustrated story. The interaction with the story is done using voice recognition. The illustration is gradually created by reading the story aloud: by pronouncing for example the word "village", a village appears on the screen, by pronouncing the word "forest", a forest is displayed and so on. The software used to create the multiple choice structure of the story is Twine. Once the story is validated, the text is integrated into the Unity3D software and the illustrations and animations are added. In the last part, applications on tablets and phones are generated to test the voice recognition.

Étienne Mineur is the creative director and co-founder of Volumique, a publishing house, but also a studio for the invention, design and development of new types of games, toys and books, based on the relationship between the tangible and the digital.  Étienne Mineur is a French designer, editor and teacher, whose work focuses on the relationship between graphics and interactivity. He graduated from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 1992 and began his career in the field of cultural CD-ROM.
