Hacking Digoin Turning heritage moulds into new vessels
Project led by Magdalena Gerber, ceramic artist, François Dumas, product designer for HEAD Genève and Corinne Jourdain Gros, CEO of Manufacture de Digoin
The students selected several traditional moulds out of the factory’s extensive collection, some still in production, others discarded since years on the shelves.
They “hacked the moulds” by assembling them in unusual ways, as well as adding elements in wood, metal or rubber so as to produce an entirely new collection of vessels. The work process followed the entire traditional production line, from testing clays to putting together the moulds to engineer new shapes, then firing and glazeing the artefacts.
Hacking Digoin provides a fresh outlook on Manufacture de Digoin’s rich design heritage and revives historic moulds for contemporary uses.
The French stoneware and pottery factory Manufacture de Digoin – Grès & Poteries was founded in 1875 as a family firm. To this day it produces everyday kitchen and garden ware: jugs, pitchers, vases, jars, pots, bowls, tumblers, vinegar makers, salt and mustard pots, cheese drainers, yoghourt pots, oven dishes, terrines, fountains, flowerpots.
