“Cut & Paste” is an on-going collective art project designed and developed by Laura Rivanera and Yán Su — two master students of visual arts Master TRANS– .
It aims to use simple hands-on actions — cut and paste — to connect people of all backgrounds and ages in Geneva, to generate knowledge production and exchange, and to stimulate social transformation through collective art practices such as collage and three-dimensional assemblage.
Bearing this goal in mind, Laura Rivanera and Yán Su have organized a series of nine free and pop-in workshops since December 2016, mostly at an out-of-centre district Libellules, in Vernier, Geneva.
Residents, artists and art fans around Geneva, as well as students of the master program participated in those workshops. The participants are from different professional and cultural backgrounds. Their ages range from 3 to over 60 years old.
During each workshop, participants were encouraged to make collective and individual cut-and-paste objects typically out of images of old magazines and flyers, and to share ideas and experiences in a convivial atmosphere.
Reflecting on artists' roles in collective art, socially engaged practices, public art, Laura Rivanera and Yán Su plan to introduce more engaging and stimulating activities and events to the project.
They also hope to explore new meanings of “Cut & Paste” in contemporary social context through collective synergy. Considerations would include aspects such as, fair use, creative commons, authorship, editorship and sharing, as well as reflections on the physical in a ‘post-digital age’ by use of tangible materials, of recycling and up-cycling, and of re-appropriated expressions.
