Cosmic Stories | Töpffer Grand Prix 2019

March 2020

Commissioners: Raphaël Oesterlé and Clément Paurd
Assisted by Raphaël Widmer, Gaëtan Bhend and Flavia Viscardi
Scenography: Félix Ernoult, Julia Guglielmetti, Joanne Joho, Perrine Morel and Sarah Niang.
Sound: Julia Guglielmetti

Mandryka's new production, Cosmic Stories is as much a parody of American science fiction comic books of the 1950s as it is a tribute to the author's childhood readings. The adventures of vigilantes of all kinds, such as Tarzan, Guy l'Éclair (French-language Flash Gordon) and Marc Costa, The Modern Hercules (Belgian version of Superman) and the spectacular, teasing covers of the pulp magazines Amazing Stories, Planet Stories and Dynamic Science Stories have left a lasting impression on young Nikita's retina and set him on the path to drawing, comics and the career he is known for.

Enter Cosmic Stories, the eponymous exhibition!

Dive into a world of second-hand space opera revisited by the creator of the famous “Concombre Masqué” !

Here the vegetable adventure gives way to the genre story. Between homage and criticism, the diversions of codes and emblematic figures of science fiction aesthetics are presented alongside their sources to offer an immersion in the process of Mandrykian creation. As
the only master on board, Mandryka invites you on a little trip back in time!

With the support of the Comic Center of the City of Lausanne for the loan of the periodicals and the Maison d'Ailleurs for that of the pulps (reproductions, Coll. Maison d'Ailleurs/Agence Martienne).

Mandryka's quotation comes from an interview with Jean-Pierre Mercier, Neuvième Art 2.0,January 2010.

"At the time, I thought life was like a comic book."
