INTERIOR EQUALITIES x UEFA Innovation Hub

September 2024 to January 2025

Studio led by Simon Husslein (Atelier Simon Husslein)
Assisted by Chiara Kocis

This project was developed in partnership with the UEFA Innovation Hub. Students collaboratively tackled the challenge of improving changing room facilities for female football players. These facilities often lack adequate safety, personal hygiene amenities, and privacy, compromising the comfort of young athletes. Additionally, the prevailing male-dominated environment within many sports clubs may not provide an inclusive atmosphere for female or non-binary players. During the semester, students devised spatial interventions to make these football facilities more inclusive. The primary aim was to identify and address shortcomings in the existing changing rooms by first recognizing the biases and then developing innovative spatial solutions to ameliorate them.

In this project, state-of-the-art technologies, including mixed reality headsets, were employed to draft and rearrange design concepts directly within the environment at a 1:1 scale. Students also learned to perform 3D scans of interiors, which were later used to implement and refine design solutions.

By the end of this project, students had gained hands-on experience in identifying and solving design problems related to gender and equality using advanced technology, preparing them for professional practice that values inclusivity and innovation in interior architecture.
