In Armenia, stone has long been a fundamental source of creativity and cultural expression. From the countless medieval churches that dot the landscape to the standardized facades of Soviet-era apartment blocks, and from intricate ornamental details to the distinctive designs of public fountains, stone has been central to the country's architectural and cultural heritage. In contrast, Switzerland saw a decline in the use of stone for construction during much of the 20th century, as the building industry shifted focus. However, as a sustainable and enduring resource, it is now more important than ever to rediscover this traditional material and preserve the knowledge and skills associated with stone construction for future generations.
In September 2024, HEAD – Geneva, in collaboration with TUMO Studios and the National University of Architecture and Construction of Armenia, organized a summer school focused on working with tuff stone. In cubes of 25x25x25 cm, students explored this material through craftsmanship and the know-how associated with its use. The program included lectures and practical work with stone. The participants' work was showcased at the end of the summer school in an open exhibition associated with the NPATAK Festival in Yerevan.
This program is financially supported by HES-SO.
