Reenacting Café Samt & Seide
Design Preis Schweiz has approached Jan Geipel, head of the department Interior Architecture at the Geneva University of Art and Design (HEAD – Genève), in order to realize a scenography for the award ceremony.
+The project was taken over by assistants Aurélie Monet Kasisi and Manon Thomas-Pavlowsky, who have imagined a revamp of an iconic project of the past : the Café Samt & Seide.
Architect Mies van der Rohe and designer Lilly Reich built Café Samt & Seide in 1927. The project was both fascinating and grandiose, but unfortunately remains not well documented. The ambition of Reenacting Café Samt & Seide is to seize this legend, rebuild a piece of the original project from the few existing archives and renew it; the precious fabrics are replaced by scaffold mesh on which a marble pattern is applied.
Through such an irreverent appropriation of a monument in the history of forms, Aurélie Monet Kasisi and Manon Thomas-Pavlowsky, who are respectively architect and designer, reenact the illustrious duo from the past. They offer an unsettling shift, both plastic and theoretical. Reenacting Café Samt & Seide pays tribute to an emblematic project and reflects simultaneously on the issue of appropriation in design and architecture.
