Born in Belgrade, Serbia, in 1946, Marina Abramovic now lives and works in New York. A major figure in performance art, she uses her own body as the subject, object and medium for her work, exploring the notions of physical and mental limits and the relationship between performing artists and their audience.
Since the early 1970s her work has been displayed in leading institutions in Europe and the USA. She has also taken part in various international exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale in 1976 and 1997 (Golden Lion for the best artist) and Documenta in Kassel in 1977, 1982 and 1992.
+The film consists of archive images, interviews with the artist and shots produced during 2009, when Abramovic was preparing her incredible performance to mark the retrospective of her work at MoMA. Akers followed her through six countries and recorded hundreds of hours of encounter with the artist and those close to her.
Marina Abramovic is currently developing the Marina Abramovic Institute (MAI) in Hudson, New York, a centre for performances and interdisciplinary teaching devoted to the presentation and preservation of long-term performances and collaboration between art, science, technology and spirituality. Housed in a former cinema renovated by Rem Koolhaas, MAI will from 2016 provide an environment in which everyone can acquire the skills to produce and observe long-term performances.
This Talking Heads event is organized in partnership with the Centre d’Art Contemporain de Genève (Geneva Contemporary Art Centre), as part of a workshop entitled MAI presents: counting the rice, to be held at the Centre from 1 to 11 May 2014.
We would like to thank the Geneva College of Landscape, Engineering and Architecture (HEPIA) for making its auditorium available for this special occasion and the Geneva Contemporary Art Centre for enabling us to organize such an event.
