TypoLab - Nina Stössinger

Of subways & offsides

The TypoLab of the Visual Communication department at HEAD – Genève invites you to the lecture: Of subways & offsides by Nina Stössinger, type designer at Frere-Jones Type.

Nina Stössinger lives in Brooklyn, where she shares the research and design process behind the newly awarded typography she created with Tobias Frere-Jones for the New York City Football Club.
How do you connect a relatively new sports team (and one from a less popular sport in the United States) to the identity and pride of this iconic city?
Tobias and Nina explored the visual history of the city's public transport system and drew inspiration from its strength and dynamism to create a connection with the citizens and supporters.

Nina Stössinger is a senior type designer at Frere-Jones Type, an independent type design studio based in New York. She is also a critic in type design at the Yale School of Art.
In addition to six type families sold commercially, such as FF Ernestine, Sélavy, and Nordvest, Nina has designed or co-designed custom typefaces for Microsoft, SAS Institute, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the Metropolitan Transit Authority of New York City, the New York City Football Club, and others. Originally from Basel, Nina studied multimedia design in Halle (Germany) and type design in Zurich and The Hague (Netherlands). Her work has received several awards and been featured in international exhibitions.
