Le Shizuko Yoshikawa Prize 2024 goes to Fine arts graduate, Gemma Ushengewe
The Visual Arts Department of HEAD - Genève is proud to announce that the recipient of the Shizuko Yoshikawa Award 2024 is Gemma Ushengewe, who graduated in 2023 from the Master in Fine Arts CCC - Curatorial and Research Practices.
Ushengewe (*1995) is a Geneva-based artist who works in the fields of documentary and experimental film, writing, and performance. Their work focuses on reappropriating narratives and addressing critical issues such as surveillance, structural racism, and neocolonialism. At the heart of their practice is the search for new forms of expression that break away from conventional storytelling, offering pathways to challenge and resist oppression. Ushengewe completed a Bachelor's degree in Cinema in 2020 and a Master's in Fine Arts in 2023 at HEAD – Genève.
The Shizuko Yoshikawa Award, endowed with CHF 25,000, has been awarded biennially since 2018. It recognizes the work of emerging artists who do not identify as cisgender men, supporting them as they embark on their professional trajectory after graduation.
