Studio - THE OTHER HOME

January 2023

Studio led by Simon Husslein (Atelier Simon Husslein)
Assisted by Damien Greder (Hypothesis atelier)

The project ‘The Other Home’ explores the expansion of what could be described as ‘home’ into the digital realm. It is predicted that we will spend an increasing amount of time of our lives inside digital environments. This might provoke a paradigm shift in human perception and behaviour. Interior architects now have the opportunity to improve the ergonomic and atmospheric qualities of spatial experiences inside virtual worlds. Expertise in Virtual Architecture will expand the understanding of ‘space’ and the capabilities working on digital and physical projects alike.

‘Home’ typically describes a structure in which a person lives, especially a house or apartment. While we have studied and mastered what a physical home is about, the architectural quality of digital ‘homes’ is yet to be explored and to be defined. In this semester's course, we will study, compare, and apply experiences from both physical and virtual environments. We will analyse and apply various factors of interior architecture, the history of symbolism and best practice in immersive architecture.

For this project, the goal is to design a virtual reality home for a certain target group. The outcome of the project is being reviewed, discussed, improved, and finally presented directly inside VR. Each project needs to demonstrate how it influences the emotional condition of its subject, whilst including various forms of expression. The designed spaces are meant to be inhabited for several hours a week. The dimensions of its inner shell should be sized to accommodate its owner and up to several visitors.
