The measurement of the growing biomass in a bioreactor remains indirect, i.e. the measurement of various physical and chemical parameters of the solution should allow its estimation. Several electrochemical measurements, such as pH value, redox potential, dissolved oxygen content, can be carried out electronically, and thus are suitable for miniaturisation.
Small volume fermentations are of increasing interest because
Important conditions for the realisation of micro-fermenter arrays are the observability of the growth evolution, and the possibility to individually regulate temperature, pH and oxygenation. This project demonstrated the development of miniaturised solutions to meet this need.
