Areas of expertise

The group is active both in the world of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and in graphical representation in three dimensions (3D). Its main objective is the search for points of convergence between the two disciplines.

Problems

The tools for the display of 3D data provided by the publishers of GIS software are mainly analysis tools but they are not adapted to the production of realistic or high-quality images intended for decision-makers and the general public.
Conversely, software for image synthesis is not capable of managing objects while keeping the link with their allocated data and retaining geo-referencing. A GIS model backed by a display mock-up would require far too much work to be efficient in the long term, with real risks of de-synchronisation.

Objectives

By creating gateways between the GIS world and the 3D world, it is possible to quickly and easily generate entire portions of the territory in the form of a virtual mock-up. With the power of 3D software, we obtain images of high graphical quality, while retaining the precision and rigour of geographical data. After inserting a development project, these mock-ups are useful as tools for aid with decision-making as well as for the designers of developments and for contracting authorities. But they are also precious tools for communication.
