Ways of Making. The Artist's Hand in Conceptual Practices

“The hand means action: it grasps, it creates, at times it would seem even to think.” It is unlikely that by restricting the scope that was until then attributed to the execution of artworks, artists from the 1960s intended to forsake this reflection on the hand which art historian Henri Focillon lauded in a text dating back to 1934. Rather, their declarations address artistic making when it does not coincide with manual labour. Shouldn’t we ascribe to the hand what is usually considered as the “conception” of the work? Conversely, aren’t there some art practices considered as conceptual even though they rely on manual labour and craftsmanship?
