Context
Photovoltaic (PV) roofs are key elements of renewable energy production. At the cantonal level, a large proportion of roofs should be covered with PV panels. This is a stated and quantified objective of the State of Geneva, the public authorities, the OCEN and the SIG.
Green roofs promote biodiversity, improve waterproofing, reduce UV degradation of the roof's polymeric membrane and reinforce the thermal inertia of a building (saving heating and cooling energy). Their implementation is supported by OCAN. In an urban situation, these two objectives are central in the context of global warming. Nevertheless, they are often in «spatial tension» during the construction or renovation of a building. The implementation of green PV roofs is an alternative to this dualism. According to initial findings (few quantifying studies), these installations seem to offer an improvement of PV production during plant activity, a diversification of «niches» for plants and a microclimate at the heat peak mitigated by the «accumulation» of coverings (PV, substrate, plants).
