Digital BIM workflows for FEDRO

Development of digital BIM workflows for the Swiss federal roads office (FEDRO), using noise protection walls as example.

The application of the BIM methodology to construct and maintain infrastructure assets would enable responsible use of resources, improved construction products and better monitoring. However, the necessary interoperable data structures have only recently been provided with the normalization of IFC 4.3 by ISO in 2024.

The aim of this project is to develop digital workflows (use cases) for the integration of the BIM methodology into the activities of the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO), using the example of noise protection walls. Latest buildingSMART use case support tools, such as bSDD and IDS will be analyzed, adapted and applied.

To realize the above-mentioned use cases, the following research issues will have to be covered:

• Interaction between BIM and GIS systems.
• Data exchange and transformation between a BIM volume model and a wireframe employed by simulation software.
• Structuring digital exchanges between stakeholders with tools existing mainly on a conceptual basis or as a proof of concept (IDS, IDM bSDD).
