Nuclear Chemistry and Physics group

As part of its applied research and development (aR&D) missions and services to third parties, the Nuclear Physics and Chemistry Competence Group is involved in research in collaboration with CERN, in projects related to the radiation protection of healthcare personnel and in services for private companies. The high-performance equipment and skills are also made available to other aRa&D projects at the school.

The members of the group give courses for the UAS training of students in the Microtechnology department at HEPIA and for those in the Medical Radiology Technology department at the HEdS (Geneva University of Health Sciences). Indeed, for more than 10 years, HEPIA and the HEdS have joined forces to offer a certificate in radiation protection to students of the Medical Radiology Technology program.

The group is developing various projects:

  • Determination of the natural radioactive concentration of rocks from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) tunnel at CERN / (U238, U235, Th232, K40).
  • Marking of an anti-AIDS molecule.
  • Determination of the origin of sulphur compounds in wines by radio-isotopic labelling.
  • Applied research in collaboration with external laboratories or institutes (CERN, Geneva Cantonal Hospital, Institute of Applied Radiophysics (IRA), Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Westinghouse Reaktor GmbH, Mühleberg Nuclear Power Plant, etc.).
  • Collaborations of the laboratories in school projects (CTI, HES-SO, mandates).
