The immediate neighbours of a transformed railway station, the districts to the south of station are being transformed. The Lausanne railway station will open to the south which will result in the demolition of building n°22-24-26 of Simplon (located at the bottom of the current underpass) as well as the Simplon car park. As a result, the southern facade of the station will be completely renovated and a new public square called «des Saugettes» will be created.
In this context, the city of Lausanne has developed a participatory approach, which invites inhabitants, shopkeepers and users of the districts to the south of the station to participate in this transformation of the public space. The first phase of this approach took the form of a large population survey (HeigVd); the second, the one in which the research group participated, organised targeted participatory workshops. The group developed a specific medium to enter into dialogue with the inhabitants, namely, a series of large drawings in perspective, to which the inhabitants directly contributed to express their wishes and ideas. The workshops were held at the Architecture Forum in Lausanne on 23 and 22 March 2017.
The ideas and information gathered will be used to inform the specifications of the competition for the development of public spaces planned in 2017 and to provide input to the considerations of the jury. Natacha Guillaumont, member of the competition jury, will give a report and ensure that the opinions of the inhabitants continue to be heard until that stage.
