The Armancette torrent produces mud/rock flows, as in the exceptional event of 22 August 2005, which deposited 160,000 m3 of material on the alluvial cone on the immediate outskirts of the village of Les Contamines-Montjoie.
The SM3A, the contracting authority, began to strengthen the protection system by increasing its capacity. The levees have been moved apart and the bed load deposit area has been enlarged. The area of the project is about 6 ha.
The new embankments sometimes rise more than 6 metres above the natural terrain and are close to houses. The integration of the future development into the landscape is therefore essential, given its location.
Carefully considered revegetation is desired, that is adapted to the protective project, sustainable, integrated into its environment and favourable to biodiversity. The SM3A has therefore called on the expertise of HEPIA's Nature Management curriculum to develop proposals for plants and techniques that meet these different requirements.
