IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) is a standardized file format (ISO 16739-1: 2018) for information exchange in the construction industry. Open BIM information exchange relies on IFC, for example. The format is composed of a structured set of classes, which is called the IFC schema.
It is important to understand the schema for a successful data exchange, especially in the context of Ra&D projects. buildingSMART offers a comprehensive documentation in HTML for different versions of the IFC schema. However, HTML files are not directly intelligible to humans.
IFC Explorer, developed by HEPIA, is a tree viewer providing a clearer presentation of the HTML documentation: schema views (structured by levels), advanced content search, graphML export, etc.
In addition, IFC Explorer offers an overview of multiple IFC schema versions, including those under development.
