Soil quality and organic carbon sequestration

RESULTERRE is a project supported by the Federal Office for Agriculture, the State of Geneva and AgriMandats. The general aim is to set up, with and for farmers, a «results-based» system for improving the quality of cultivated soils, adapting them to climate change and sequestering organic carbon. The project will run for 6 years, starting in 2023. The main questions concern the effectiveness and the technical, economic and sociological advantages and disadvantages of such an approach, and the identification of improved agricultural practices.

HEPIA has been mandated to provide scientific support and monitor the impact of the project on

1. limiting periods without living plant cover by quantifying aerial biomass using remote sensing,
2. improving soil quality by increasing the SOC:clay ratio and
3. carbon stock evolution.
