HEAD photographies 2019-2025

At HEAD – Genève, photography is not seen as a closed discipline or a skill to be reproduced, but as an open field. Here, teaching photography means guiding rather than framing. It means offering students a space where their individual approaches can unfold, be tried out, and challenged. Because students never need ready-made models, but fertile ground and a welcoming environment that encourages the emergence of multiple voices.

Never before have images been so omnipresent; nor has photography ever seemed so close to dissolving into an undifferentiated flow. Faced with this unprecedented context, teaching at HEAD encourages students to think about photography as porous to other artistic and social practices. This pedagogy is based on experimentation, hybridisation, and the invention of forms that cannot yet be classified.

Led by artists, photographers, and theorists, this approach focuses on diversity of perspective: each student is invited to develop personal research that engages with contemporary issues, whether aesthetic, political or social. Each student has their own way of being in the world, and of viewing and thinking about it. Thus images become a means of giving form, and photography becomes as much a tool for questioning as a space for creation.

Launched in 2019, the HEAD photographies collection showcases some of these unique approaches. It brings together projects which, bold or fragile, grounded or unruly, demonstrate what a supportive teaching approach can be: encouraging rather than standardising, opening up to diversity rather than reducing to uniformity. Through this diversity of trajectories, responses to the coming transformations in photography begin to take shape.
