Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession that aims to improve, maintain, and/or restore the mobility and functional abilities of individuals of all ages, affected by pain, trauma, disabilities, illnesses, aging, or environmental factors.

The Bachelor’s degree in Physiotherapy aims to train physiotherapists capable of addressing situations in four key areas:

  • The musculoskeletal system (orthopaedic, traumatic, and rheumatological disorders, etc.)
  • The neuromuscular and sensory system (neurological disorders, both central and peripheral, etc.)
  • Internal systems (respiratory, cardiac, vascular, and metabolic disorders, etc.)
  • Cross-cutting health aspects (health promotion, prevention, public/humanitarian health, etc.)

 

Study duration

The Bachelor’s programme is completed over three years (a minimum of six semesters and a maximum of twelve) on a full-time basis only, including 34 weeks of practical training.

Successful completion of the various modules, which combine theory and practice, leads to the acquisition of 180 ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer System).

Degree awarded

Upon completion of their studies, students are awarded the Bachelor of Science HES-SO in Physiotherapy.

This European-recognised degree enables graduates to enter the workforce directly or pursue further education, such as a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS), Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS), Master of Advanced Studies (MAS), Master of Science (MSc), or Doctorate (PhD), in Switzerland or abroad.

Career prospects

Physiotherapists operate in a wide range of fields, which are becoming increasingly diverse :

  • Clinical practice: hospitals, medical institutions, private practice in clinics or home-based care
  • Prevention and health promotion: schools, sports or health centres
  • Scientific research and teaching
  • International cooperation and humanitarian aid
  • Management and project management: socio-health institutions, public administrations, etc.

Applications will be made exclusively online from January 2024.

Regulation Examinations

Applications for the Physiotherapy programme are subject to regulation examinations, which will take place online in April 2024. All relevant information regarding these examinations can be found on the HES-SO website.

 

The Bachelor’s programme is a full-time course lasting 3 years (a minimum of six semesters and a maximum of twelve). Theoretical training at the School alternates with practical training in clinical placements, which account for one-third of the curriculum, amounting to 34 weeks.

  • A Bachelor’s thesis concluding the programme (10 ECTS credits)

In the Bachelor’s programme in Physiotherapy, practical training accounts for one-third of the curriculum, amounting to 34 weeks over three years.
