Music and musicology

The BA with music and musicology as the main subject enables students to combine practical training at the HEM with studies in musicology at Geneva University.

The programme incorporates all the modules of the BA in musicology from the University of Geneva, together with practical classes taken at the HEM. This BA is the most generalist training that the HEM offers, in that it then enables the student to continue their studies at the University and/or the HEM. Indeed, obtaining this BA enables students to access a Master’s in musicology at the University of Geneva, and various Master’s courses at the HEM, subject to extra training to be defined and successfully getting through the admissions process.

Trained in both the high-level practice of music and in mastery of the methodological tools of musicology, the students who complete this BA demonstrate their vast skills and knowledge at a public recital lasting 45-50 minutes, accompanied by a research paper documenting the theoretical part of musical interpretation.

For this BA, registration occurs at the HEM that bestows the degree, but the students are nonetheless subject to the admissions criteria stipulated by the University (‘maturité gymnasiale’ or equivalent qualification). Furthermore, the validation rules at each institution apply to the teaching that is dispensed there.
