The piano class in the Department of Music and Movement at the Haute école de musique de Genève (HEM) is taught by two experienced professors who are also active concert performers: Sarah Branchi-Cascone and Stephane Ginsburgh. They work in close cooperation with the other professors in the department, particularly when it comes to improvisation.
The piano class taught to students on the music and movement course throughout their degree (bachelor’s degree and master’s degree) enables them to acquire skills that complete their multidisciplinary training, the pillars of which are music, movement and rhythm, improvisation and pedagogy.
The main objective of the class is to explore a “tailored” piano repertoire. It is a matter of enabling students to compile as expansive a range of works as possible, in all styles and from all eras. Special attention is paid to the relationships between this repertoire and movement of the body. Another objective is to compile a special pedagogical repertoire that will serve as the basis for their future work as teachers. The programme is completed with chamber music and ensemble music, reading, musical analysis, practical harmony and improvisation.
The students at the HEM’s music and movement department regularly take part in internal performances within the department, of original personal and collective works, Masterclasses, concerts or projects with a broader scope alongside the HEM’s other departments or a number of external cultural partners, including the Institut Jaques Dalcroze de Genève, with whom our institution has close ties. These various activities enable our students to pick up experience of broadcasting and of the stage, and to build the foundations of their professional network.
