The HES-SO network

The proposal to set up hautes écoles spécialisées (HES – universities of applied sciences) was approved by the Swiss federal government (Conseil Fédéral) in spring 1998. It aimed to overhaul and adapt vocational training in Switzerland. The new HES were created to improve the quality of vocational training, make it conform to European standards and offer programmes ranging from apprenticeships to university-level qualifications.

HEG-Geneva is a key player in this ambitious project. It is a higher education institution created in 1998 from the merger of different Geneva vocational schools and part of the Western Switzerland University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HES-SO). HEG-Geneva is the largest of the nine specialised Swiss hautes écoles.

HES-SO welcomes some 15’000 students on 27 different sites in 7 French-speaking cantons (French-speaking Bern, Fribourg, Geneva, Valais, Neuchâtel, Vaud and Jura). The institution offers programmes in six key areas : Business, Management and Services, Engineering and Architecture, Design and Visual Arts, Music and Performing Arts, Health and Social Work.

HES-Geneva comprises HEG-Geneva, HEPIA (Haute école du paysage, d'ingénierie et d'architecture – specialising in engineering and architecture), HEAD (Haute école d’arts et de design – specialising in art and design), HEDS (Haute école de santé – specialising in health), HETS (Haute école de travail social – specialising in social work) and HEM (Haute école de musique – specialising in music).

HEG-Geneva is the only HES-SO business school with four departments related to the fields of economics and services : business economics, business computing, information studies and International Business Management.

HEG-Genève is the only HES in Switzerland to bring together the four fields of study related to economics and services:
