Refunct Media Modular
How can we give our old discarded electronics new poetic reuses and potentials? How can we create installations and objects that take the counterpoint of our current society driven by technological progress and growth?
During this one week workshop, participants of the Refunct Media Modular workshop were invited to create “Refunct” Modules using various e-waste, especially hand held electronics, while also collaborating with others to connect their modules to the line. Designing systems and installations that were voluntarily complex and unstable, participants addressed themes gravitating towards questions of e-waste, planned obsolescence and sustainable design strategies. Rather than proposing answers, they freely explored practices of hacking and subversions: addressing through unchallenged possibilities of ‘obsolete’ electronic and digital media our relationship with technologies and consumption. How can the logic of “new” media be questioned through arts and design methodologies? How can we give our old discarded electronics new poetic reuses and potentials? How can we create installations and objects that take the counterpoint of our current society driven by technological progress and growth?
