Established in 2020 at the HEM Centre for Musical Cultures, the HEM Oriental Ensemble is directed by Basel Rajoub with the help of Eugènia Saval Llorca. The Ensemble is centered around an orchestral nucleus with added oriental instruments, such as oud, qanun, and digital percussions. Immigrants from associated cultural areas bring their cultural assets to the ensemble.
The project aims at recreating a traditional experience of based on improvisation, ornamentation, on the fluctuation of forms, and on creative invention within the formal frameworks of cyclical rhythms and maqams. The Ensemble regularly invites soloists to perform at its concerts.
